Sharing Smiles Day provides free dental care

Katherine E. Pfaff

DSO and Sunnybrook Dentistry and Braces provided dental care for no cost during the Sharing Smiles Day event in May. The day resulted in dental care for more than 200 children and adults nationwide.

The partnering DSO, Benevis, worked with Sunnybrook to provide care for patients who were uninsured or underinsured. Patients did not pay anything for the care they were provided. Care included dental cleanings, extractions, emergency care, and restorative care.

“Our volunteer team treated 17 patients and although our target was underserved young patients, we also treated adult patients needing surgical and simple extractions. The appreciation shown by the patients was palpable,” shared Dr. Thomas Sagrera, one of the volunteer dentists from

Sunnybrook. Dentists who volunteered their time for the event included Dr. Kineshia Roark, and Dr. Cristie Rives and added up to about 30 dentists total. In total, some 294 staff from Sunnybrook and 22 from Benevis participated in the event.

“I’m so thankful for my team; they had such servant hearts to come on their day off and help those in need,” shared Dr. Cristie Rives. Since the program began, Sharing Smiles Day has provided dental relief to more than 2,000 uninsured and underinsured patients across 16 states through the efforts of more than 1,200 volunteers. Sharing Smiles Day was a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community.”
