MDA to offer free dental care Feb 4-5

State dental organization representing more than 70% of dentists, Minnesota Dental Association, will hold a clinic for kids to receive free dental care in early February. The event, called Give Kids a Smile, will include 50 locations and volunteer time from about 1,000 dental professionals.

Appointments for the event should be made and depend on the type of care being sought. Patients, who must be ≤18 years old should be with a guardian or parent. Volunteers will speak various languages in an effort to increase access.

The volunteer effort is the latest in Minnesota Dental Associations’ efforts. Since 2003, dentists in Minnesota have volunteered their time to care for more than 81,000 children. The states’ dentists have donated their time to an estimated value of $24 million.

According to state information, more than half of Minnesotan children who are covered under Medicaid have not had any dental appointments within the last 12 months. At the same time, Minnesota is currently among the states with the lowest reimbursement for government dental plans.
