Let the accuracy of the numbers guide us

Today, we interview Frederik Marcil, Founder & CEO of Kube Innovation.

We have become accustomed to continuous evolution in healthcare in recent years. The dental market is not an exception.

We can expect the introduction of novel and groundbreaking technologies that will immensely benefit both dentists and patients over the years.

Thanks to a new device in the market, let's see how this is happening.

Tell us about this new device; how does it work?

The Innobyte is the first and only bite force measuring device. It is a Canadian innovation that Kube Innovation is commercializing globally. The Innobyte measures the bite force of patients in less than 30 seconds. You simply insert the mouthpiece into the patient's mouth and ask them to bite as hard as possible. The result is instantly displayed, and the clinician can correlate the value with the provided reference chart.

Why is measuring the bite force so essential for dental clinicians? Is the qualitative evaluation of the bite force not enough?

According to the literature, up to 35% of dental restorations fail soon after being in the mouth. It is very surprising the force that some patients can exert. For example, it is imperative to know the bite force of a patient before prescribing a filling. New scientific evidence suggests that crowns should be prescribed to patients instead of fillings when the force is above 1,000 Newtons to prevent catastrophic restoration failures.

What clinical evidence do we have available?

Bite force has been researched for several decades in the literature. There are many applications to bite force. Currently, the most compelling evidence is oriented toward selecting implant characteristics as a function of the force, material selections, treatment plan design, and appliances therapy.

Knowing the exact bite force number, what benefit does it have for the dentist, the patient, and the lab?

The benefits are many, both for the dentist, the lab, and the patient as well:

  • Choosing the right material can optimize the restoration design to the force of the patient;
  • Help to prevent restoration failures;
  • Demonstrate the need for immediate treatment to patients unequivocally;
  • Educate patients on their restoration limitations due to their bite force;
  • Show patients before and after results quantifying their improvement.

Can we talk about economic benefits as well?

We recently conducted a survey with our existing clients, and the impact on their business in the first year following the integration of the Innobyte as a standard in their consultations.  They are seeing:

  • +68% more night guards sold
  • +24% more crowns sold vs. filling
  • +41% more implant cases sold

Do you think today's market is aware of the importance of this accurate measurement and how to achieve it?

No, not nearly enough.  With a new biometric standard clinicians need to be educated on how to incorporate bite force measurements into their daily practice.

What excites you the most when you think about the company and what's ahead over the next two to three years?

The exponential adoption of this new biometric standard as well as the new clinical applications from accurately measuring bite force.

For anyone intrigued by this technology, where should they go to learn more?

Those interested can find more information on our website or by contacting us directly. We will be happy to share our experience and that of our customers.

About Frederik Marcil

Frederick is an  entrepreneur passionate about technology and the world of dentistry. He received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Concordia University in Montreal and was driven to develop innovative digital devices never before seen in dentistry.  He worked in the aeronautic industry prior to launching his own business.

About Kube Innovation

Kube innovation created the first commercially available bite force measuring device. Their patented innovation measures the absolute force in less than 30 seconds. They are actively commercializing the Innobyte across North America and are planning a global expansion starting in Europe. The Innobyte is now the latest biometric standard used to help clinicians improve patients' quality of life. This is achieved by providing clinicians with accurate data to prescribe the best treatment possible specifically to the patient.
