3-D printing to near $8B

Katherine E. Pfaff

According to a report by market analysis firm, MarketsandMarkets, the global market for dental 3-D printing is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 20.2%. The increase across the forecast period includes a 2022 estimated value of $3.2 billion up to a 2027 valuation of $7.9 billion.

The market is expected to grow based on increasing rates of older patients with aging teeth, increasing rates of dental disease, including caries that have added to need for dental treatment, and increasing interest in cosmetic improvements for patients’ appearance. This has led to more dental clinics and hospitals purchasing 3-D printers for their own practices.

The market report found that the largest segment was services at 65.5%, with equipment and materials segments taking up smaller portions. When divided into segments by technology, the vat polymerization took 53.0% in the 2021 marketplace based on its breadth of uses including dentures, dental implants, restorations, porous scaffolds, prosthetics, and craniomaxillofacial guides. Additional technologies include polyjet printing, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling.

North America took the largest share of the market in 2021 with 35.8%. Also in the same year, dental labs held the largest share of the market by end user at 78.6% likely due to the increasing number of labs around the world. Prosthodontics was the largest share of the application segment in 2021 at 55% as the demand for bridges and crowns grew.
