Showcasing future dentists as artists

Texas A&M College of Dentistry’s talent shows have long served as opportunities for students to show off some of their artistic talents.

University update

But students desired more, and they recently formed TAMCOD Studio Art Society to host workshops, socials and, most importantly, provide busy students another opportunity to showcase their creative talents.

“Being in dental school, it can be hard to find time and motivation to create art …,” said fourth-year dental student Julie Truong, founder and president. “I recruited some classmates who are as passionate as I am, and we started the process last fall.

More than 20 students have created art using both paper marbling and faux stained-glass techniques.

Why it matters

“We are also hoping to do a collaboration with another organization and hopefully introduce more students to art,” Truong said. “We have an amazing executive board this year, and I’m excited to see this organization grow.”

Dr. Victoria Woo, faculty adviser of SAS, said the activities allow students to express themselves and de-stress. They also support fine motor skill development and manual dexterity.

“Our students are already exceptional communicators, but I hope the SAS gives them opportunities to express themselves in ways that extend beyond what is required by our profession,” said Woo, clinical professor in oral and maxillofacial pathology in diagnostic sciences. “Because many of the activities are collaborative, the group also serves as an enriching way to build community outside the academic environment. It is open to all students and offers activities that welcome every art level—from true beginners to advanced artists. Above all, my hope is that students leave with friendships, memories, and perhaps even an art piece or two they can proudly treasure for years to come, well beyond dental school.”
