A recent in vitro study conducted by researchers in India¹ demonstrates that activating the irrigant with the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly accelerates bacterial reduction.
More than 35% of canal surfaces are left untouched after instrumentation.² Thus, root canal irrigation is a crucial step in endodontic treatment. However, manual irrigation has its limitations, particularly when it comes to effectively cleaning complex canal anatomies. In hard-to-reach areas, the irrigant is often not distributed well enough, making it difficult to mechanically remove biofilm and debris. Passive irrigation alone is often insufficient to clean the entire root canal system. This is where activation comes into play. It enhances the effect of the irrigant, enabling it to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.
A recent in vitro study conducted by researchers from the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at the SIBAR Institute of Dental Sciences in India demonstrated the extent of this effect. The study compared bacterial reduction using 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) alone and in combination with sonic activation using the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator.
The results show that 1% sodium hypochlorite, both alone and in combination with sonic activation, effectively reduces bacterial load. However, activation using the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly accelerates this effect: a reduction of more than 95% was achieved within one minute, and a reduction of over 99.9% was achieved within approximately two and a half minutes. The bacterial load was nearly completely eliminated thereafter. Across all measurement intervals, activated irrigation consistently outperformed the other protocols evaluated.
For clinical practice, this primarily means improved efficiency. The significantly faster reduction in bacterial load enables a structured, time-efficient treatment workflow and supports consistent clinical outcomes. Effective cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system contribute significantly to long-term treatment success. Irrigant activation is therefore an important component of modern endodontic treatment protocols.
“The SmartLite Pro EndoActivator can be considered a preferred option for achieving thorough root canal debridement, owing to its enhanced motion dynamics, improved ergonomic design, and greater efficiency in reducing microbial load,” said Dr. Nagesh Bolla of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at SIBAR Institute of Dental Sciences in Takkellapadu, Andhra Pradesh, India. “Overall, it allows for a much more efficient irrigation workflow.”
“The study results confirm the high performance of the SmartLite Pro EndoActivator,” said Xochitl Javier, vice president of Endodontics at Dentsply Sirona. “They also demonstrate the impact that activation can have on irrigation protocols. The SmartLite Pro EndoActivator helps clinicians perform safe and efficient irrigation, thereby making a significant contribution to clinical treatment success.”
