The Minnesota Dental Association has called on state lawmakers to update Medicaid reimbursements for dental care. According to MDA, the current Medicaid reimbursement rates for dental providers are based on average charges from 1989.
The antiquated rates have caused some providers not to participate in Medicaid, and some patients choose to receive dental care in the emergency room. Adding to the issue, according to MDA, the state is not sufficiently investing in care, and the state continues to have low reimbursement rates compared to the nation.
Low reimbursement has led to poor access to care, MDA reported; In 2016 and 2017, 60% of children on Medicaid had not been to a dentist, according to Minnesota’s Department of Human Services. MDA advocates for legislation proposed as part of the Health and Human Services Omnibus would bring Medicaid reimbursement to 2018 rates. A second would streamline the management of dental programs and make the processes transparent and efficient.
