Align support dentists as vaccinators

Katherine E. Pfaff

Medical device firm and maker of Invisalign and iTero intraoral scanners, Align Technology, Inc., has signified its support to dentists’ ability to provide COVID-19 vaccinations. Dentists are trained to provide intra- and extra-oral tissue injections, begin IVs for sedated procedures, and are often trusted, community members. Additionally, some states already allow dentists to provide other injections, such as cosmetic fillers, Botox. Align further shared that the move to allow dentists to provide COVID-19 should be an initial step in expanding the professionals’ ability to vaccinate against other diseases in the future.

According to a statement, Julie Coletti, Align Technology svp, chief legal and regulatory officer, shared: “Since the start of the pandemic, Align’s customers – primarily dentists and orthodontists across the country – have been at the forefront of their profession and healthcare, in general, using social media and virtual appointment and treatment monitoring tools to stay connected with and communicate public health and safety protocols to their patients. As essential health care providers of ongoing health care services, they have earned their patients’ trust by staying current with the latest health and safety protocols and public health requirements to safely and responsibly treat their patients.”
