SBHCs reopened for kids’ dental care

Katherine E. Pfaff

New York State reopened its school-based health centers, or SBHCs, in order to provide essential care and screenings for patients without access otherwise. The move, a joint effort by the New York State Dental Association and New York School Based Health Alliance, and Community Healthcare Association of New York, allows kids from pre-K to 12th grade to receive dental services, among other care.

Students have been unable to be seen in person since March 2020, and some were being cared for through teledentistry visits. State funding supports more than 300 SBHCs in urban, rural, and suburban communities across New York.
