A New Era in Restorative Dentistry

In restorative dentistry, repair or reconstruction of teeth present significant challenges. Diseases, traumatic injuries and pathological agents often can lead to partial or complete damage of dental structures.

Since human teeth have limited regenerative capacity, there is a need to develop new therapeutic strategies directed at the repair of the injured tooth structures using highly performing biomaterials, innovative technologies and stem cell-based therapies.

The combined advancements of nanotechnology and novel regenerative treatments for restoring teeth and surrounding tissues require interdisciplinary approaches that bring together clinicians, biologists, engineers and materials science experts, with the aim to customise hi-tech combinations of biomaterials and stem cells in order to stimulate specific and favorable biological responses.

Presently, although promising research studies are ongoing for the definitive repair of human teeth, there is no established and reliable stem cell-based therapy translated into the clinics. This paper reviews modern treatments in restorative dentistry and describes future perspectives for successful approaches in dental tissues regeneration.
