Video: Dr. Sinead McEnhill talks multidisciplinary care in implantology

Edra Publishing interviewed dental industry leaders and authors at the recent International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany.

IDS organizers estimated that attendees numbered 120,000 throughout the convention. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the IDS, which premiered in 1923. The convention featured innovations and new technologies in digital dentistry.

In this interview, Dr. Sinead McEnhill talked about her background in dentistry and a new book in the works.

McEnhill’s father was a dentist and she said that she spent part of her teenage years working at his dental practice.

“I learned very quickly how to work with patients in an extremely busy general dental practice in Ireland,” she said.

McEnhill said that it was logical, since she knew so much about dentistry, that she chose the dental field as her career, too. Her three brothers also chose to go into the dental profession.

“You could say that we have absolutely no imagination, but we rarely talk about dentistry at home,” she said with a smile. “We all love our jobs and we get a buzz out of the incredible journey dentistry has been for us.”

McEnhill’s forthcoming book encompasses multidisciplinary dentistry within implantology.

“Most cases, as we know, don’t involve a single tooth space,” she explained. “It’s very much a multidisciplinary approach to how we assess and plan for treatment. The book is about how we standardize our workflows for every patient every time. The vast majority of our implant cases involve hygiene, a functional issue such as tooth wear or an alignment case, which means we have to get our spacing perfect before an implant goes into position.”

Dr. Sinead McEnhill is the director of Belmore Dental Implant Clinic in Northern Ireland. The practice was named 2017 Irish Practice of the Year, Overall Best Team Ireland 2017 and Best Team UK North at the Private Dentistry Awards in 2016-17.

McEnhill opened the clinic in 2003. She has served as a tutor and practice assessor for the diploma in Implant Dentistry course at the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and is a clinical mentor for SmileTube for the RCS (Ed) implant diploma.

She specializes in the use of digital dentistry for implant and bone reconstruction, including multi-disciplinary planning using Digital Smile Design, while mentoring and teaching dentists on their postgraduate journey. She lectures across the UK on digital workflow for dentists in implant dentistry and has published articles on the same topic.

McEnhill received a master’s degree in implant dentistry from Leeds University, where her research was related to peri-implantitis. As recognition of her focus on philanthropy and dental achievements, she was inducted as a fellow into the International College of Dentists in 2015 from Trinity College Dublin.
