ADA report: Dental practice expenses outpacing practice revenues

Practice expenses are rising faster than practice revenues, according to the latest Survey of Dental Practice report from the ADA Health Policy Institute (HPI). This discrepancy is driving the downward trend in dentists’ net incomes.

According to the data, practice revenues between 2018 to 2022 increased by 2.2 percent compared to 2013 to 2017, while expenses rose by 7.7 percent over the same intervals. In the same timeframe, general practitioner dentists’ incomes fell from a median of $216,077 to $200,326 – a 7.3 percent decrease.

Income, revenue and expenses were adjusted for inflation using the All-Item Consumer Price Index, valued at 2022 dollars.
