The ADA Health Policy Institute has long tracked the state of the U.S. dentist workforce. Now, for the first time, dentist demographic data from 2001 to 2022 is available in one interactive tool.
The American Dental Association announced this news for its Health Policy Institute on May 2.
In the dashboard, you can:
From a quick glance of the dashboard, in 2022, there were more than 202,000 dentists in the U.S. This equates to 60.8 dentists for every 100,000 people. This figure is not much higher than what it was in 2001, when data showed the ratio was 57.3 for every 100,000 people.
In 2022, 68.4% of dentist were White, 19.4% were Asian, 5.9% were Hispanic and 3.8% were Black or African American.
In addition, 62.2% of dentists were male and 36.7% were female, according to the data.
For optimal experience, ADA suggests viewing the dashboard on a larger screen. A help guide is also available if you have questions about using the tool.
In addition, the HPI has published another resource about the dentist workforce. The Supply of Dentists in the U.S., 2001-2022 is now available in Excel format. Data include number of dentists per state and per 100,000 population, specialty, gender, and age.
