A collaboration between Crest, Oral-B, The Smile Generation, and Pacific Dental Services (PDS) Foundation will bring together a webinar on the link between oral and brain health in late June. The event, “Oral systemic health: the link between periodontal disease and brain health,” will focus on the connection from oral health to systemic health and brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Attendees can earn 1.5 CE credits. Register at: https://www.cezoom.com/events/?course=8633.
According to the hosts, research has indicated that inflammation and certain bacteria can be a sign of or cause of systemic disease. Periodontal disease has been linked as cause or exacerbation of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, oral cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
“Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients with periodontal disease declined more rapidly with their condition than those who did not have periodontal disease,” says Katie McCann Lee, DDS. “Additionally, research published in Alzheimer's Research and Therapy showed that patients with chronic gum inflammation lasting longer than 10 years were 70% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. Because of this, maintaining good oral health is essential for both Alzheimer’s patients and for reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.”
The event will feature speakers Steven Masley, MD, Anne O. Rice, RDH, and McCann. and will be moderated by PDS’ chief enterprise strategy officer, Daniel Burke. Masley is a fellow-certified physician, nutritionist, author, and patient educator. Rice is a fellow of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health, certified dementia practitioner, and certified brain longevity specialist with Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation. McCann is a dentist who owns multiple practices and is committed to clinical education and the importance of systemic health.
