Purpose: Zirconia (ZrO2) is a ceramic material with adequate mechanical properties for manufacturing of medical devices. Zirconia stabilized with Y2O3 has the best properties for these applications. Aim of this work is to underline how the characteristic of zirconia can be considered useful for dental implant rehabilitation.
Methods: Mono-component endosseous implants (White-SKY ®, Bredent, Senden Germany ) made of sintered and yttrium-stabilised zirconium oxide have been utilized in oral surgery for the restoration of single tooth or partially edentulous ridges rehabilitation. This case report describes an ongoing clinical investigation of zirconia dental implant positioned in maxillary posterior area. Results: The patient came to our observation for the rehabilitation of the maxillary posterior area. Two one-piece (implant abutment) ZrO2 implant (White-SKY ®, Bredent, Senden Germany )with sandblasted surface was implanted.
The preoperative situation was ideal in terms of soft tissue and bone preservation. The soft tissue healed successfully around the implants within few days. The case was finally restored with a ZrO2 crown and ceramic. Clinical Significance: Today, it is accepted that zirconium oxide is a highly biocompatible material and it is being used in restorative dentistry for many years. The scientific evidence shows that zirconium oxide dental implants osseointegrate well.
This reports want to be one of the step for future research on this topic, to underline how this material can be considered safe and predictable in oral surgery.
