The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) recently launched an eLearning course to provide accreditation in biological dental hygiene. The program is designed to give hygienists a deeper understanding of the science behind oral health and its impact on systemic health.
The program is offered on a new online learning system and utilizes peer-reviewed journal articles and video, according to a news release. The Academy also offers a virtual or in-person workshop for dental hygienists as part of the accreditation process. The format allows students to learn when they have time and at their own pace of studying.
The course is designed for beginners as well as others seeking professional development to advance their careers, and those seeking to earn CE credits. Specific topics covered in the course include understanding the signs of breathing issues related to sleep, biocompatibility of dental materials, the impact of nutrition on periodontal health and the potential risks of fluoride.
Students will also receive instruction on how to reduce exposure to mercury with amalgam fillings.
They will also receive personal mentorship from experts, access to peer-reviewed research articles about biological dentistry, and partnership in a professional network committed to continuing to investigate the oral-systemic connection.
