Edra Publishing interviewed dental industry leaders and authors at the recent International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany.
IDS organizers estimated that attendees numbered 120,000 throughout the convention. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the IDS, which premiered in 1923. The convention featured innovations and new technologies in digital dentistry.
In this interview, Dr. Lisa Germain talked about her background as a dentist and her forthcoming book, which highlights the use of cosmetic injectables in dental practices.
Germain said that growing up in Brooklyn, New York, she wanted to be an artist. One morning, she was heading to an art class at the Pratt Institute when she had a conversation with her father about a career path. He suggested she continue to explore her artistic side but that she also might consider a profession that would support her financially.
“I thought ‘dentistry is kind of like art,’” she said. So, at the very young age of about 10 years old, Germain said she decided to be a dentist.
“I didn’t look back,” she said. “I knew right then and there that is what I wanted to do.” Germain said she continues to explore art as well.
The concept for her book started in her dental practice, when she began to incorporate the use of Botox into her practice, in addition to performing root canals. As an endodontist, she hadn’t typically dealt with a lot of cosmetic procedures, she said.
Germain said what piqued her interest in injectables was learning more about the therapeutic benefits of Botox.
“In order to learn therapeutics, you have to understand the cosmetic implications of what you’re doing,” she explained. If you make patients look funny, they’re not happy with you, Germain said.
“This book is really about learning how to use botulinum neurotoxin in the dental office as a therapeutic procedure,” she said.
Dr. Lisa Germain is a board-certified endodontist who works in private practice in New Orleans. She received her DDS degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Germain subsequently received a specialty degree in endodontics as well as a master’s degree from Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. She is a fellow of both the Misch Implant Institute and the American Academy of Oral Implantologists. While practicing endodontics, Germain diagnosed and treated many patients suffering from facial pain that was not odontogenic in origin. This provided an impetus to pursue studies in the diagnosis and treatment of facial pain syndromes not caused by toothache. Her passion and expertise in the use of botulinum neurotoxin for therapeutic use, as well as for cosmetic use, grew from this challenge.
