In honor of Veterans Day, the nonprofit Dental Lifeline Network is requesting donations that will make it possible to continue screening qualified veterans and linking them with volunteer dentists who will provide free treatment and care.
“Veterans Day is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served our country,” wrote network president and CEO Fred J. Leviton in an email to supporters. “But did you know as many as 1.5 million American veterans are living in poverty and don't have access to dental care? Many of them suffer from serious dental conditions but have nowhere to turn for help.”
The network’s Donated Dental Services program provides free, comprehensive dental treatment to the country’s most vulnerable people with disabilities or who are elderly or medically fragile. The program operates through a volunteer network of dentists and dental labs across the U.S.
Since its inception in 1985, the DDS program has surpassed $500 million in donated dental care, transforming the lives of more than 165,000 people.
“This year, Donated Dental Services will help 1,200 veterans with disabilities or who are elderly or medically fragile get the dental care they need,” Mr. Leviton wrote. “Our network of 15,000 dentists and 3,400 laboratories are standing by [and] will treat these vets for free. But we need your help.”
In 2021, the ADA honored Mr. Leviton with honorary membership in the ADA, and numerous ADA members and leaders have served on the network’s board.
