Dental network company, Aspen Dental, treated hundreds in a recent effort in San Martín Jilotepeque, Guatemala. The volunteer project provided care for more than 600 children who did not have affordable and quality dental care access.
“Unfortunately, in so many communities the combination of COVID-19, lack of access to technology and high costs means dental care has been unavailable to many of these children for most, if not all, of their lives,” said Lauren McDonough, DMD, vice president and practice owner development, Aspen Dental, and leader of the event in Guatemala. “Each one of these children has a story and a future – to be able to be a small part of their story and alleviate pain or provide preventative care to impact their overall health is a true privilege.”
The work continues Aspen’s initiative, Healthy Mouth Movement. The 2014 initiative aims to reduce barriers to adequate care and thereby increasing access to quality dental care around the globe.
“When you have any kind of pain in your teeth or mouth, it's challenging because it can impact eating, drinking and other basic, critical needs,” said Amel Rassoul, DMD, a dentist who provided care during the trip to Guatemala. “We truly want to give them the best care possible and show them small ways to maintain their oral hygiene to improve their overall health.”
Aspen Dental has a network of almost 1,000 practices. The company has provided free edental care to more than 35,000 veterans globally and a toral of more than $26 million in dental care.
