ROLE AND UTILITY OF THE KERATINIZED MUCOSA AROUND DENTAL IMPLANTS

Authors: Paolo Gaetani

The objective of this work is to evaluate the usefulness or not of keratinized mucosa (KM) in the prevention of inflammatory phenomena, gingival recessions and loss of support tissue around dental implants.

Materials and methods
Starting from the exposition of some clinical cases in which the quantity of KM around the emergency of dental implants with different techniques has been increased, the topic has been discussed through the revision of the international literature on the subject, examining the most important works published in high impact factor journals.

Results and conclusions
Although it has not always been agreed among the various authors on the utility of KM in preventing peri-implant pathologies, it has been found that most studies consider it desirable to have a fair amount of KM, in height and thickness, around the emergency of the implants in order to prevent, directly or indirectly, various kind of problems.
