Video: Dr. Michael Grossman, author of “Foundational Orthodontics for the General Practitioner”

Edra Publishing interviewed dental industry leaders and authors at the recent International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany.

IDS organizers estimated that attendees numbered 120,000 throughout the convention. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the IDS, which premiered in 1923. The convention featured innovations and new technologies in digital dentistry.

In this interview, Dr. Michael Grossman talked about his background as a dentist, his typical day at the practice and a new book on orthodontics to be published in the next year.

Grossman said that he was around 20 years old and in college, considering medical school, when he decided to become a dentist. He shadowed his dentist for a day and found that the career really matched his personality. Grossman enjoyed getting to know the patients and said his dentist seemed to enjoy the day, too.

Grossman is a general dentist who owns five practices. He sees patients at least 3.5 days per week, he said, and helps manage life with four kids at home when he’s not working.

In his practice, Grossman said that around 50 percent of his work is in orthodontics and the other half is in restorative dentistry.

“What I really love is treating patients,” he said. About half of his orthodontic cases are aligners and the other half are bracket wires with other appliances for younger patients.

The book will cover diagnosis to case selection, when to refer and the how-tos of myofunctional therapy to bracket wire, straight wire appliance and aligners,” Grossman explained. The book will also provide step-by-step technique applications.

“So many GPs I talk to do not do a lot of orthodontics,” he said. “They’re happy to place many implants but shy away from ortho. It’s such a great service to offer your patients. As technology is improving, it opens more doors for GPs to do more ortho. But you need to have a good diagnostic foundation.”
