Israeli startup BioChange has developed a breakthrough technology for tissue regeneration. This new technology, known as ReGum, was found to successfully treat periodontitis — gum recession disease — in dogs.
ReGum led to a 100% improvement in comparison to the standard-of-care treatment regimen, with a significant regeneration of periodontal tissue including gum and bone tissues, according to a BioChange news release. The statistically significant findings were recently published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
Dr. Ana Nemec, principal investigator of the study and veterinary faculty at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, said the addition of this new product during professional treatment by a veterinarian can make a significant difference, saving more teeth from extraction. Co-authors include first author Dr. Jerzy Pawel Gawor from veterinary clinic Arka in Krakow, Poland, and Dr. Peter Strøm of Specialistdyrehospitalet in Denmark.
Ishay Attar, BioChange founder and CEO, said that Dr. Nemec’s research began as an important exploration of the startup’s regenerative scaffold technology platform and eventually led to these results.
"We were able to regenerate the complex periodontal tissue, which is made up of four different tissue types that support the tooth," he said. "No other product has been able to achieve such results in terms of safety and effectiveness."
Periodontal disease is a common ailment in both dogs and people and effective treatments are needed, according to BioChange.
The technology is being developed currently for veterinary use and ultimately is also planned to be available for human use. BioChange expects regulatory approval for use in people within the next couple of years. About 40% of human adults are estimated to have some effect from periodontitis and gum recession.
Ostrow researchers probe how vasculature impacts stem cell diversity. The new study could lead to better treatments for tissue regeneration.
