Edra Publishing interviewed dental industry leaders and authors at the recent International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany.
IDS organizers estimated that attendees numbered 120,000 throughout the convention. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the IDS, which premiered in 1923. The convention featured innovations and new technologies in digital dentistry.
In this interview, Dr. Travis Campbell talked about his background as a dentist and his book, “Understanding Dental Insurance: A Guide for Dentists and their Teams.”
Campbell said he decided to be a dentist when he was only three years old.
“I had a lot of people in my life, especially my father, who always feared going to the dentist,” he explained. “I never understand why, so that made me more interested” in dentistry.
He shadowed a dentist when he was young and said that everything he learned made him want to be a dentist even more.
Given how young he was, Campbell said that his parents thought he would change his mind. But when he eventually was accepted into dental school, they realized he’d found his career path.
As for his book, Campbell said dental students spend at least four years learning about how to do dentistry, but almost no time learning how to get paid to do dentistry.
“Our patients all have insurance, and it is probably the number one most complained-about topic in dentistry,” he said. Campbell said it irritated him as well. Over the years, he learned how to deal with it in a more effective manner. There weren’t a lot of resources out there to find out how to manage the payment side of dentistry. He did a lot of research and put this knowledge base together in a way to make it easier for dentists and their teams to manage insurance and get paid for all the hard work they’re doing.
