The October 2022 issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association provides a candid look at exclusion and underrepresentation in dentistry from the patient and clinician perspective.
According to a news release from the association, the journal offers multiple scenarios with teaching points for integrating diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in clinical encounters.
“As a profession, dentistry has the collective obligation to provide oral health care to everyone,” said Dr. Kerry K. Carney, DDS, editor-in-chief of the Journal. She said that the focus of these articles is the impact on patient care in dental practices.
Articles in the October issue include:
• Humanizing Oral Health: Race, Representation and Equity in Dental Education and Oral Health Care by Professor Mary Lomax-Ghirarduzzi, vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion at University of the Pacific
• Improving Access to Care and Patient Experience Through Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging by Elisa Chavez, DDS, professor at University of the Pacific
• The Importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from the Clinician’s Perspective by Pamela Arbuckle Alston, DDS, Jessica Baisley DDS, Andrea Akabike DDS and Jack Luomanen DMD
The Journal is an award-winning peer-reviewed scientific publication that keeps dentists up to date about scientific advances, business management strategies and new products.
