Spooky season sparks thrilling fun at ASOD

Halloween was a day of festive fun and spooky shenanigans for students, faculty and staff at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry. Decorating began the night before the event and by Friday, October 31, the atrium of ASOD had been transformed with cobwebs, skeletons and other frightful décor.

The ASOD Halloween party has been an annual event for more than 25 years. The event is planned and executed by the Human Relations Committee, whose goal is to promote a sense of community and fun through school activities. HRC committee members include  Deedra Donley, Leena Balicat, Jack King, Kelly Howell, Becky Lewis, Wendy Clark, Courtney Fearrington, Monique Hayes, Chavolla Hester, Lisa Lassiter, Rachel Madariaga, Sherri Tate and Daniella Onofrio.

Sherrie Tate, department manager in Diagnostic Sciences and a member of the committee said “I love working with my team on planning the party and enjoy seeing all of my co-workers dressed up and having fun. My favorite part is greeting everyone and checking out their costumes.”

This year, there were individual and group costume contests, a pumpkin carving/decorating contest, epic performances and lots of treats. The individual costume contest brought out a tiny snowboarder, the tin man from the “Wizard of Oz,” and a handmaiden from the “Handmaid’s Tale,” with the snowboarder taking the top prize. Group costumes and performances included the ensemble cast from “Wicked,” characters from “Shrek,” Santa and her reindeer, and much more. Two group costumes tied for the win in that category; orthodontics residents dressed as characters from the “Lion King” and orthodontics residents dressed as “Monsters, Inc.” characters complete with a custom-made bedroom door.
