A day of care and gratitude for veterans

Veterans across the U.S. face significant challenges in accessing dental care, which can have far-reaching effects on their overall health and well-being. Of the nine million veterans eligible for medical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), an estimated 85% do not qualify for dental coverage. Many of those individuals are disproportionately affected by dental disease.

To help address this critical gap in care, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) hosted its annual Give Veterans a Smile (GVAS) event. Now in its fifth year, the student-led initiative provides free dental care to veterans and their spouses, offering services ranging from cleanings and exams to preventive education and referrals for ongoing care. 

The event is supported by over 50 volunteers, including Harvard dental students, faculty, and staff. This year, more than 20 U.S. veterans and their spouses were treated. 

“Sometimes, Give Veterans a Smile is the first dental care veterans have received in years,” said Brendon Anderson, DMD27, a student organizer of the event. “This annual event reflects HSDM's ongoing commitment to caring for veterans and other underserved communities in Boston and nearby areas.”

For Robert Fields and his wife Lynda, word of the event came through the American Legion. A U.S. Navy veteran who served for 10 years, Robert said the opportunity to receive care filled a long-standing gap.

“I’ve had my ups and downs with taking care of my teeth and missing dental appointments,” he shared. “I don’t have dental insurance, so I thought this was a great opportunity to come in and have my mouth checked out.”

For others, the day offered not only access to much-needed care but also meaningful connections with students who were eager to give back.

“It’s so important to take care of your teeth. I’m grateful for this event and the chance to have my oral health evaluated,” said Anthony, a retired U.S. Navy veteran from Beverly. “The students are wonderful—it means a lot to see their dedication.”

The success of the annual event continues to deepen HSDM’s connections with local veteran organizations and expand outreach efforts to ensure more veterans receive the care they deserve. As the program grows, organizers hope to inspire similar initiatives across the dental community, bolstering oral health care for those who have served the nation. Last year, the American Dental Association (ADA) announced it would launch a nation-wide GVAS initiative. 

For the student volunteers, the event serves as both a clinical and human reminder of the impact of compassionate care. 

“Give Veterans a Smile is an event the entire HSDM community rallies behind,” said Anderson. “It’s a testament to our collective commitment to serving those who have served us.”
