NYU Dentistry Creates BS in Dental Hygiene with Concentration in Dental Science

NYU College of Dentistry is introducing a bachelor of science (BS) in dental hygiene with a new concentration in dental science, preparing students for careers as healthcare providers and providing a pathway for those interested in applying to dental school or other graduate health programs.

This new degree concentration will follow a rigorous curriculum that includes science, math, and liberal arts courses—many through NYU’s College of Arts and Science—that are prerequisites for applying to dental school, medical school, and other health degree programs. It will also prepare students to practice as dental hygienists after graduation.

“In this unique program, students learn highly practical skills to be part of a healthcare team immediately upon graduation,” said Dianne Sefo, RDH, MEd, chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene and Assisting at NYU Dentistry. “In working alongside other oral health professionals and taking the required courses to apply to dental school, students are given an inside look into what could be in their future, and can use that knowledge to make an informed decision about their professional goals.”

Dental hygiene is a fast-growing and rewarding profession, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Dental hygiene students at NYU Dentistry learn in a real-world clinical environment in the country’s largest dental school, collaborating with dental hygiene and dental faculty, dental students, and clinic staff in caring for New York City’s diverse population. In addition to their coursework, students rotate through different clinics to apply their knowledge and gain exposure to a range of specialties.

“We frequently hear from dental practices wanting to hire our graduates, and these potential employers often say that our students graduate ‘practice ready,’” said Sefo. “This new degree concentration provides students with experience, knowledge, and preparation that no other program does, and increases their opportunities to either practice as a dental hygienist or pursue further education without needing additional coursework.”

Applications for the BS in dental hygiene with a concentration in dental science are open; the program will admit its first students for Fall 2024.
