“Speaking with clinicians around the US and the world over the past several months about their personal and professional lives in the age of coronavirus, I’ve concluded that they fall into two camps. One camp feels their lives will never be the same again and they are very unhappy. The other camp feels their lives will never be the same again and they are very happy.
The happy campers are telling me that they’ve reconnected with their kids and their spouse. They’ve decided they finally have time to raise a puppy. They’ve discovered that they can be almost as productive—and a whole lot less stressed out—working four days a week from nine to three versus their pre-covid schedule working five days a week from eight to six. They’ve embraced new protocols and systems that have made their patients and staff confident and comfortable in returning to the office. In other words, they have reimagined what their life can be and reengineered its foundation to create something new and better. They aren’t looking backward with regret, but forward with the courage and conviction that they will succeed differently. Of course, they haven’t done it alone. They’ve enlisted the support of other clinicians who are also rethinking and reinventing their lives on the fly and sharing their ideas and innovations.
Like Walt Disney’s imaginers, these clinicians are making possible what many others think is impossible, personally and professionally. Symposium 2021 is dedicated to our amazing clinical imaginers.”
