The product company, Oralucent Inc., has introduced a phototherapy toothbrush that uses red and blue light to brighten and clean teeth. Calling for advancement for the toothbrush, an oral healthcare staple, Oralucent has patented the device which emits the two colors of light to create a whitening and antimicrobial effect. The lights can also reach areas of the mouth that can be difficult to treat.
The combination device was built with the backing of 5 years of research and development that included input from engineers, dentists, and scientists. The device also works as part of a package that includes IoT light therapy information and the ability to share data and eye protection that utilizes machine learning. The toothbrush also has spin and sonic capabilities.
Blue light has been utilized in antimicrobial studies, according to the company, and in this application is used in combination with Oralucent’s 02Gel that includes a peroxide ingredient. Together, the dual treatment is expected to reduce bacteria that is associated with bad breath, dental and gum disease. At the same time, the blue light can also target staining on teeth, reducing discoloration for a whitening effect.
Red light on the other hand is often used in cosmetic and medical treatments, including to improve circulation, foster growth of tissues, reduce inflammation, and reduce sensitivity for teeth, according to Oralucent.
