The dental profession is mourning the loss of Byoung In Suh, a pioneering scientist, educator, and entrepreneur whose work helped define modern adhesive dentistry. As the founder of BISCO, Inc. in 1981, Dr. Suh transformed a growing area of research into practical, reliable solutions that clinicians depend on every day.
Trained as a research chemist and later earning his PhD in Dental Medicine, Dr. Suh brought a uniquely rigorous scientific perspective to dentistry. At a time when adhesive techniques were still evolving, he recognized their potential to improve restorative outcomes and patient care. Through BISCO, he focused on developing materials grounded in evidence and performance, helping move adhesive dentistry from concept to clinical standard. His leadership positioned the company as a respected innovator in dental materials, with products that have had a lasting impact on restorative procedures worldwide.
Dr. Suh’s influence extended far beyond product development. Over the course of his career, he secured more than twenty patents and authored more than 150 scientific publications, contributing extensively to the scientific foundation of adhesive dentistry. His textbook, Principles of Adhesion Dentistry , reflects his deep expertise and enduring commitment to education. For more than three decades, he traveled globally, lecturing to clinicians and researchers and sharing insights that helped elevate standards of care across the profession.
He was widely recognized for his contributions, receiving honors from leading dental organizations as well as international recognition for his role in advancing collaboration and innovation. Yet those who worked with him often point to his character as his most defining trait. Dr. Suh was known for his humility, generosity, and dedication to mentoring others—values that remain embedded in the culture of BISCO today.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he supported educational initiatives and community organizations, reflecting a lifelong belief in giving back and fostering future generations of dental professionals.
Dr. Suh’s legacy is evident not only in the materials and techniques used in practices around the world, but also in the countless clinicians, researchers, and students he inspired. His contributions will continue to shape dentistry for years to come.
