Ohio Dentist Voted President-Elect by the ADA

Dr. Thomas M. Paumier, a dentist in Canton, Ohio, is the new President-Elect of the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Paumier was elected at the ADA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 27.

Dr. Paumier has been an active volunteer leader and member of the ADA for more than 35 years. Previously, he served on the ADA Strategic Forecasting Committee as Chair of the Public/Professional Subcommittee, as well as Chair of the Council on Members Insurance and Retirement Programs. He has served on two scientific expert panels, which developed clinical practice guidelines related to appropriate antibiotic use, as well as the COVID Recovery Task Force. Throughout his years of service, he has been deeply involved in many ADA committees, subcommittees, task forces, and groups.

“I love our profession and the ADA, and I’m passionate about its success,” said Dr. Paumier, President-Elect of the ADA for the 2025–2026 term. “I have a vision for what the ADA should look like and how to remain a sustainable organization… We must focus on the needs of members and help practice owners and employed dentists with challenging insurance issues, including contracts supportive of a healthy work environment and autonomy in all clinical decision-making.”

In 2012, Dr. Paumier was elected Vice President of the Ohio Dental Association (ODA), and in 2013 he was elected President-Elect and served as President from 2014–2015. He is currently the President of the ODA Wellness Trust Board and has held many other vital leadership roles for the ODA.

Dr. Paumier is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and is involved in numerous organizations. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Ohio Section for the American College of Dentists and Chair of the Mercy Medical Center Development Foundation Board Endowment Committee. He is also the Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital Board of Trustees and a member of the Procter & Gamble Global Oral Health Systemic Health Advisory Board. He also sits on the Cleveland Clinic Ohio Regional Hospitals Board of Directors Executive Committee.

Dr. Paumier graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. After completing his certificate for general practice residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, he went on to open his own private practice in Canton, Ohio, where he currently resides with his wife, S. Christy Paumier.

Dr. Paumier is on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital General Practice Residency. He also lectures nationally on topics in oral medicine and clinical dentistry and teaches dental students at Case Western School of Dental Medicine.

“My leadership and vision have been demonstrated throughout my service to the ADA,” Dr. Paumier added. “Together we can better meet the needs of our members and build a strong foundation for the next generation of dentists.”
