The Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) is pleased to welcome Steven D. Spitz, DMD, as its new president for the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 governance years. Dr. Spitz began his two-year tenure on July 1, 2025, succeeding Abe Abdul, DMD, MBA, who now serves as the immediate past president of the MDS Board of Trustees.
“We are honored to welcome Dr. Spitz as president of the Massachusetts Dental Society,” said Kevin C. Monteiro, MBA, CAE, MDS CEO and executive director. “Dr. Spitz’s forward-thinking leadership, unwavering dedication, and innovative spirit will be instrumental in advancing our mission to empower dental professionals and support dental patients across Massachusetts. Together, we are confident that the MDS will continue to serve as the leading authority on oral health, advance key legislation, and improve patients’ access to high-quality care throughout the Commonwealth.”
Dr. Spitz has practiced in the Boston area for over 20 years and has served on the MDS Board of Trustees as vice president since 2023, in addition to holding numerous leadership roles within the MDS, including serving as chair of the Society’s Metropolitan District.
In 1997, he founded Smileboston Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry in Brookline, a specialty dental practice renowned for its integrated surgical and restorative care. A prosthodontist by training, Dr. Spitz specializes in the treatment of complex dental and facial conditions, particularly the restoration and replacement of missing teeth. He was the first dentist in the United States to place dental implants using the Waterlase Dental Laser and remains the only prosthodontist worldwide with Advanced Pinhole Certification from the Chao Pinhole Academy.
Dr. Spitz’s commitment to dentistry extends beyond the clinic through his impactful community involvement. He served as the international president of the Alpha Omega International Dental Society (2018–2019), provided pro bono care to Holocaust survivors through the Alpha Omega–Henry Schein Cares Oral Health Program, which he began doing in 2015, and founded the Oral Health Care Among Species Program at Zoo New England, where he is the on-call dentist for the zoo animals. Dr. Spitz is also vice president of the Bright Spirit Children’s Foundation and formerly worked as the official team dentist for the Boston Red Sox, from where he continues to treat several of the players privately.
“It is a true honor to serve as president of the Massachusetts Dental Society,” said Dr. Spitz. “Throughout my career, I’ve worked to blend compassion, innovation, and clinical excellence to improve the patient experience. As president, I am dedicated to advocating for both dental professionals and the patients we serve, ensuring every Massachusetts resident has access to high-quality oral health care.”
Dr. Spitz holds a DMD from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and earned his Certificate in Prosthodontics from Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Boston VA Healthcare System. He completed a General Practice Residency through Jackson Memorial Hospital/Miami VA and served for nine years as a clinical professor of prosthodontics at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. His professional journey began with a degree in Animal Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
