IAOCI recognizes research excellence at World Congress

Edra Publishing awards winners with dentistry textbooks

Varo Boyer

The judges for the poster competition at the recent 2023 International Academy of Ceramic Implantology Congress reviewed entries from clinicians and researchers from around the world, including Slovenia, Brazil, Italy and the U.S.

Dr. Varo Boyer, DDS; Saurabh Gupta and Dr. Flavia Sukekava, DDS, evaluated the posters on research goals, methodology, clinical relevance, results and conclusions.

Winning posters included:

  • First place, Dr. Gregor Hocevar from Slovenia, who presented a poster on the rehabilitation in the aesthetic zone using one-piece ceramic implants.
  • In second place, Dr. Simone Galbiati from the University of Milan, who analyzed immediate versus delayed loading of two-piece zirconia implants.
  • Third place awards (a tie) went to Dr. Shepard DeLong from Oregon who presented on robotic-assisted dental implant surgery and Dr. Alexandre Marques from Brazil, who presented findings from a prospective study of a new two-piece ceramic implant.

Boyer said that the dentists and researchers chose a wide variety of content — clinical and research-based. Some presentations were dedicated to the material science of ceramic implants.

“The atmosphere was entertaining and educational, and the posters were well received by the audience,” he said. “It was a good learning and exchange experience between ceramic implantologists all over the world.”

Boyer said IACOI leaders look forward to seeing what next year’s competition will bring.

Dr. Varo Boyer works at the Elite Dental Implant Center in Simi Valley, California. He graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry and continued his training at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals in Los Angeles. His focus was on treating medically compromised patients, covering trauma cases in the emergency room, and included extensive dental surgery training. Boyer graduated from a two-year implant residency at the UCLA Dental Implant Continuum, which features the newest technologies and advancements in the field of dental implants. He is a faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with dental students and residents.
