Building Smiles and Trust: Dr. Mohammed’s Vital Role in Community Health Outreach

Liya Mohammed

As part of Wellpoint’s ongoing commitment to advancing oral health and addressing disparities in underserved communities, a health screening and basketball event was held on May 28th in Union City. WellPoint, a leading Medicaid managed care organization focused on improving health outcomes for underserved communities, supported the event as a way to promote whole health in an accessible and engaging setting.

At this vibrant intersection of health and community, the May 28th event brought together families, healthcare professionals, and public health advocates with one shared goal: to make preventive care accessible, welcoming, and impactful. This event was part of a broader outreach initiative focused on advancing whole health and health equity, beginning with oral health. During the dental screenings, families received valuable insights into their dental care, often marking the first step in accessing services that had long been delayed or never received.

A standout of the event was the leadership and presence of Dr. Liya Mohammed, whose ability to engage with children and parents helped transform routine screenings into meaningful and memorable moments. Her clinical expertise, paired with an approachable and compassionate style, fostered a welcoming environment that elevated the entire experience.

Dr. Mohammed’s contributions extended beyond clinical care—her involvement helped shape a setting where attendees felt safe, seen, and supported. Her work reflected the kind of culturally responsive, human-centered approach that is core to Wellpoint’s mission.

The event also underscored the importance of delivering essential health services directly to the communities that need them most. It reflected Wellpoint NJ & Dr. Mohammed’s continued commitment to whole health by addressing physical, emotional, and social needs—starting with strong community partnerships and trusted local providers.

The dental services offered under Dr. Mohammed’s guidance became a highlight of the evening, with long lines forming well before the event officially began. Children were seen leaving the screening area with smiles—not just for the free toothbrushes, but because they had been treated with kindness and respect.

This event underscores the critical importance of bringing health services directly into the communities where they’re needed most. It also highlights the transformative role that dedicated providers like Dr. Mohammed play in shaping not only individual health outcomes, but the community's long-term relationship with care.
