The American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery, or ABFCS, is open to membership applications. The organization is the only medical board which certifies facial cosmetic surgeons for face, head, and neck aesthetic procedures.
Applicants can be from several medical fields, such as oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, dermatology, oculoplastic surgery, and others. With accreditation from ABFCS, practitioners are signifying their skill level through credentialing. Membership also includes access to the experts within the field to share knowledge and learnings.
Two routes for membership are available, including post-residency facial cosmetic surgery fellowship training, and through experience. Fellowship training is certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, and includes education, 1-2 years of supervised training, and passage of an exam. Surgeons who have performed relevant facial cosmetic surgeries can attain board certification through proof of such treatment cases. This option is open to oral and maxillofacial surgeons, along other specialties.
