NYC dntl bar aims to modernize dentist visits

Katherine E. Pfaff

New York City-based dental practice, dntl bar, provides convenience, relaxation, and upfront pricing. The three-location practice offers appointments that can be accommodated in one day, massage chairs, aromatherapy, and Netflix.

"The dental industry, like most healthcare systems, has evolved into a payer- or provider-first oriented system. While not necessarily the intent of many hard-working clinical professionals, it has nonetheless become a place where the consumer is found standing last in line," said Nedal Shami, co-founder, and chief executive officer of dntl bar, co-founder of CityMD. "From making an appointment, following up for your care, paying a bill or even the basic principles of respecting your time and starting on time, nothing is simple for the patient. We think we can change that." CityMD is a patient-centered provider of urgent care services.

The dentist offices are open every day from 8 am to 8 pm hours during the week and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends. Appointments can be made online and within the same day or week, depending on treatments. Patients also can receive information via text. The physical dentist office space is crafted to look like a lounge, and patients can use noise-canceling headphones, listen to music, or watch Netflix while receiving care.

Dental staff are hired based on "rigorous" standards and are regularly reviewed. The dntl bar reported an NPS score of 90, while the average score in the industry is 1, according to the company. The company plans to open 50 new city-based offices in 5 years.
