Texas law ushers in teledentistry in the state

Katherine E. Pfaff

On June 16, Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, signed a bill into law making teledentistry available across the state, expanding the telehealth options in Texas. The legislation was advocated for by telehealth company, DialCare, which worked with Senator Charles Perry, Representative Stephanie Klick, and lobbyist Andrea McWilliams. DialCare president, Jeremy Hedrick, also testified to support the bill and met with legislators to craft the bill.

"Throughout the COVID-19 shutdowns, patient access to telehealth services became essential," said Senator Perry. "The Legislature responded by adding dentistry to the Texas telehealth statute. Teledentistry better connects patients with their dentists by allowing them to offer services beyond the brick and mortar office. By passing this law, more underserved Texans will have better access to preventative dental care and be able to live a healthier life through the care they will receive."

The legislation broadens access to teledentistry. DialCare’s teledentistry services virtually connect patients to licensed dentists via phone or video call 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. DialCare launched its virtual dentistry program in 2020. Texas is the 49th state where DialCare operates.
