OHF: Gum disease significant, may act as a predictor of COVID-19 mortality

Katherine E. Pfaff

The Oral Health Foundation recently reported research that points to gum disease as a possible indicator of poor outcome with COVID-19. The research, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, looked at more than 500 patients and found that those with severe gum disease were as much as five times more likely to need a ventilator and nine times more likely to die if infected with COVID-19.

OHF suggested the study highlights the importance of gum health, which is indicated by bleeding gums. Regular teeth cleaning, removal of plaque and tartar, and early gum disease detection and treatment are essential to maintain oral health.
