ADA: Dentists authorized to give COVID-19 vaccinations

Author: Katherine Pfaff

On March 12th, dentists and dental students were given the countrywide greenlight to administer COVID-19 vaccinations, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). The broadened consent comes after 28 states previously individually authorized dentists to vaccinate patients.

Dentists and dental students, among other providers, are allowed to give vaccinations after the Department of Health and Human Services made an amendment to its emergency declaration, part of the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act. In February, the ADA had issued a letter to HHS requesting national allowance for dental providers to act as vaccinators, as well as liability coverage.

PREP, which comes into play during public health emergencies, includes temporary cover from tort liability claims, with the exception of instances of intentional misconduct.
