Dentsply Sirona Celebrates 40 Years of CEREC

Dentsply Sirona is celebrating four decades of clinical experience and continuous R&D for the CEREC system. From scan to design and manufacturing, the CEREC workflow allows dental professionals to deliver permanent restorations (crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, veneers, and implant restorations) in a single visit. Now seamlessly connected to the DS Core cloud platform, the CEREC solution empowers dental professionals to deliver efficient end-to-end workflows, while creating opportunities to grow their practices, delegate intuitive tasks, reduce chairtime, and consistently deliver single-visit dentistry that sets the practice apart.

In the 40 years since Prof. Dr. Dr. Werner Mörmann and Dr.-Ing. Marco Brandestini from the University of Zurich invented the CEREC system, the innovation that marked the beginning of digital dentistry has continued to evolve.

Backed by four decades of evidence-based performance and continuous material innovation, the CEREC system offers a rock-solid foundation for today’s most advanced chairside manufacturing workflows, empowering dentists to deliver precise, high-quality restorations in a single visit and transforming what was once a multi-appointment process into a seamless, comfortable experience for patients.

With access to more than 60 validated¹ materials from Dentsply Sirona and nine trusted material partners, clinicians can create crowns, bridges, inlays, onlays, and implant restorations tailored to each patient’s needs. Today, more than 7 million crowns are milled annually with CEREC milling machines², underscoring its role in modern restorative dentistry. And now, with its integration into DS Core, digital dentistry has taken the next leap forward to connected dentistry, where digital workflows, cloud-based collaboration, and real-time data access unite to elevate patient care and practice efficiency.

By connecting the CEREC system with DS Core, dental professionals can unlock new opportunities for growth across a wide range of treatments—from restorative and aligner therapies to implants and sleep appliances. DS Core enhances flexibility and streamlines workflow management by enabling dental professionals to initiate IO scans directly in DS Core, with scan and design files seamlessly uploaded back to DS Core to the correct patient record, and allowing design manufacturing to be initiated remotely with a single click on any connected device. It further optimizes efficiency by providing access to equipment and consumables data, along with automatically generated job documentation to support quality assurance of the manufacturing process.

With the introduction of Primescan 2³, this flexibility is taken even further. Scans can now be captured on DS Core, enabling design work to begin immediately from any connected design station—freeing up the scanner for the next patient. Design files can then be shared, and manufacturing initiated through DS Core⁴ using CEREC Primemill, allowing practice teams to take on more workflow tasks while maintaining full visibility of all design and production statuses in one centralized platform.

“As a long-time CEREC user, the ability to start every treatment from DS Core is a significant gain in efficiency for my team,” said Dr. Gertrud Fabel, dentist from Munich, Germany. “Single-visit dentistry is already something that patients genuinely appreciate, and with the patient communication canvas in DS Core, I am able to help my patients visualize their oral situation and better understand the treatment plan.”

Ultimately, DS Core enhances manufacturing efficiency with faster turnaround times and more predictable outcomes, empowering dental teams to work smarter, engage patients in real time, and deliver clinically proven results in a single visit.

Supported by high-quality clinical education

Dentsply Sirona is committed to offering dental professionals high-quality, comprehensive clinical education to fully leverage the benefits offered by the CEREC system and connected dentistry. The company has 57 education centers in 35 countries and an expanding number of online and on-demand programs to ensure that dental professionals can work at the cutting edge of dentistry. The CEREC workflow’s long history provides an additional advantage to users—a large, global community of CAD/CAM users from whom they can get support and feedback as well as exchange ideas and experience.

“What I love most about the CEREC ecosystem is the community that surrounds it,” said Dr. Mike Skramstad, dentist from Minnesota, USA. “That collective expertise means every practice, no matter its size, can tap into real-time support and keep pushing the boundaries of patient care.”

Discover the Power of CEREC at Dentsply Sirona World in Las Vegas

DS World Las Vegas 2025, taking place from September 26 to 28 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will offer dental professionals a closer look at the latest developments in CEREC and chairside CAD/CAM technology. Whether attendees are experienced users or new to digital workflows, the event will feature practical sessions, expert guidance, and hands-on demonstrations. With opportunities to learn from peers and industry leaders, participants can gain useful insights into how digital tools can support clinical outcomes and practice efficiency.
