Joint Commission and Prometric to offer new DLOSCE clinical exam

Author: Katherine Pfaff

A new exam is designed to reduce exposure to possible diseases, including COVID-19, by replacing patients with virtual models. The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and Prometric have developed a new gateway Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination (DLOSCE) designed to increase safety during the pandemic. The new DLOSCE will omit previous clinical assessments that required exams with actual patients, instead opting for a 3-D model to simulate patients.

The exam will assess skills and judgment with 3-D models in a virtual setup. Other disciplines, including medicine and nursing, currently use virtual models in testing. The exam was created by dental professionals and is intended to test participants on situations commonly encountered in practice. Prometric, which helped to design the DLOSCE, will administer the exams in the US.
