Case Study #2 - CBCT and the advantages of using 3D radiology

Authors: Prof. Dr. Daniele Cardaropoli, Dr. Alessandro Roffredo

Fig. 4Fig. 4

Female patient, 53 years old. She came to our attention for a problem related to a three-element bridge in zone 25-26-27. The intraoral examination was diagnosed with the unrecoverability of element 2.4, the need for root canal therapy of 2.7, and considerable horizontal bone resorption in the 26 sites.

Removal of the prosthetic artifact, extraction of 2.5, root canal therapy and temporary restoration of 2.7 (Fig. 4), and horizontal bone regeneration surgery were performed.

The two-dimensional control X-ray performed at the end of the healing period demonstrates sufficient bone to accommodate the implant fixtures. However, the complexity of the case, the proximity of the maxillary sinus, and the need for a more precise assessment of bone volumes justified the execution of a CBCT with FOV 4x4 and a "Regular"

The tomographic cuts obtained (Fig. 6 and Fig. 7) allowed the accurate evaluation of the residual bone volumes and the adjacent anatomical structures not otherwise appreciable in the two-dimensional view of the site, allowing the operator to insert the implants in complete safety and full compliance of the patient's anatomy (Fig. 8)
