Custom and non-custom oral appliance, myTAP, from manufacturer Airway Management, Inc., could aid patients dealing with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Recent studies have shown that the non-custom version is as effective as the customized appliance, according to the company.
The findings are from a randomized controlled trial by the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam which found the custom and non-custom versions of the oral appliance were equally effective. The study also potentially helps patients seeking relief after a recent recall of machines for continuous positive airway pressure, more commonly known as CPAP. The recall subsequently led to shortages of CPAP devices made by other manufacturers.
Oral appliances which do not require customization are immediately available and could help to abate the demand for oral appliances. The devices also offer a cost savings over customized or other options.
The company reports that since the recall of a common CPAP machine about 1 year ago, sales of their myTAP oral appliances have increased by about 40%. Compliance is also thought to be higher with an oral appliance compared to a CPAP machine. Compliance with a device is necessary to properly treat a patient’s sleep apnea and/or snoring.
myTAP is currently available and was also adopted for use by Kaiser Permanente and the Armed Forces.
The revenue of the Sleep Apnea oral appliances market was estimated to be $0.4 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $0.9 billion by 2028.
