Fiber posts made with CAD/CAM system: a valid alternative to metal posts made in laboratory

Massimo Gagliani

The old diatribe between the fiber post and the metal post seems to have been definitively resolved, since the survival of the teeth reconstructed with the first ones is similar to that obtained with the latter. However, aesthetic requirements or particular biomechanical situations can give rise to the opportunity to use fiber posts.

How to adapt them in ovoid canals?

This question was answered by Dr. Angelo Sonaglia (in the photo and author of the reported case) who had advocated the use of fiber posts adapted to the root canal through the impression of the canal lumen  with CAD/CAM systems.

The goodness of the system has been validated by a good research appeared in the American Journal of Dentistry which has made clear the following points:

  • in oval shaped canals take an impression with an intraoral scanner system of the lumen and let it pack through a milling CAD/CAM system;
  • a post with suitable morphology allows to achieve excellent results both in terms of retention and homogeneity of the cement within the endodontic space.

A new way to restore endodontically treated teeth  through digital technology.
